An analysis of the latest Sony PlayStation 3 Sales Performance

has seen According to NPD Research Analyst, Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console released a year on sales slump by almost 25 percent in January 2009. In January 2008 the company sold 269 000 units in the U.S., while this year the number just over 203,000 units. Many would suggest that this slowing of performance on the global economic downturn, others can assume that was because of this new generation of game consoles on the market for well over twoYears ago there was a resulting fall in demand. Despite these seemingly obvious statements, it seems that the problem is Sony-specific. The same report also noted that sales growth of the Xbox 360 from Microsoft a 25.5 percent to 309,000 units in January 2009, while Nintendo's Wii an even greater profit, with sales up from 59.5 percent to 676,000 units. So what are the reasons for these contrasting sales figures? In my opinion there are two major factors.

The first is the Sony consolesrelatively high price. Although it is on the market since October 2006, we have only seen a price drop and that was from what I feel was an unrealistically high introductory price. The current suggested retail price of a PS3 is almost twice as high as an Xbox 360 Premium or a Nintendo Wii. It is true that you get more for your money with the PS3, in particular an integrated Blu-ray player, and wireless connectivity, but for the consumer who only wants to play the current price is a big hurdle.Sony has to compete to lower prices, but also for the current selling price, it is widely reported that they lose money on every unit sold. Until they can engineer the console to connect to a much lower cost, I would assume they sell less consoles better, but to minimize a higher price to their losses on any device. The downside is more from their competitors consoles, games and accessories sold in a warehouse user base for their rivals. PerhapsIt is in Sony's interest to sell more units, but simply to a loss to gain market share, although I am sure, this is just something Sony can decide for themselves.

The second factor that I feel contributes to the poor sales performance is the PlayStation's integrated Blu-ray drive. Since the Blu-ray formats launch of PlayStation 3 was widely considered the best and cheapest Blu-ray player on the market, a title, it was renowned for about two years. Why consumers buy a lotexpensive, but worse stand-alone players, if they could just get a PS3? Perhaps much of the early sales were not players, but for film fans. It is only in recent months that this situation was reversed. Stand-alone Blu-ray player from the likes of Sony and Panasonic themselves have the advantage, stolen from the PS3 with cheaper players, better performance and much better aesthetics. After all, the PS3 is not exactly a style icon.

It seems to me that despite hisbest of intentions, Sony has found themselves in a predicament with the PS3. There is no doubt it is a fantastic piece of technology, but its production cost and therefore retail sale may cost more to consumers than an impairment in their technical specification is an attraction
